What is a landing page, and when do you need one instead of a website?

If you run ads, launch offers or promote events, a landing page can do a better job than your whole website. Here’s what it is and when to use one.

A simple definition

A landing page is a single web page designed to get visitors to take one specific action — send an enquiry, book a call, claim an offer, register for an event. Unlike a normal website, it has few or no distractions: often no full menu, no links to other pages, just everything a visitor needs to decide.

When you need a landing page

  • You’re running paid ads. Sending ad clicks to your homepage makes people hunt for the offer. A landing page that matches the ad keeps them focused.
  • You have one clear offer. A launch, a seasonal promotion, a free consultation or a workshop.
  • You’re promoting an event. Date, place, what to expect and a registration button — nothing else.
  • You don’t have a website yet. A single well-made page can be a fast, affordable first step.

What a good landing page includes

A headline that matches the promise

If your ad says “Free garden design consultation”, the landing page headline should say the same thing. Consistency reassures people they’re in the right place.

Clear benefits, not just features

Explain what the visitor gets and why it matters to them, in a few short points.

Honest proof

Real reviews, examples of your work, your experience or a short introduction to you. Never invent testimonials.

One call to action

Repeat the same button — “Book my free consultation” — rather than offering five different choices.

Speed and mobile design

Most ad clicks come from phones. A slow page loses people before they read a word.

Measurement

Track how many visitors take the action. That number tells you whether the offer, the page or the ad needs improving.

Common landing page mistakes

  • Too many links that lead people away from the offer.
  • A long form that asks for more than you need.
  • A headline that doesn’t match the ad.
  • No clear reason to act now.
  • Pretty design, but no proof and no clear next step.

Quick answers

Common follow-up questions.

Still unsure? Ask me anything or message me on WhatsApp.

Can a landing page rank on Google?

It can, but landing pages are usually built for campaigns and ads. For search traffic, a well-structured website with service pages and articles is normally stronger.

How long should a landing page be?

As long as it needs to be to answer the visitor’s main questions — and no longer. A simple offer can be short; a bigger decision needs more detail and proof.

Should a landing page have a menu?

Usually no, or a very minimal one. Fewer exits keep attention on the single action.
