Meta ads vs Google ads: which should a small business try first?

Both platforms can bring customers. But they work in very different ways, and starting on the wrong one is an expensive lesson.

The short answer

Google ads usually suit businesses that people already search for — “emergency plumber”, “wedding cake order”, “accountant for freelancers”. Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) usually suit businesses with something visual or new to show people who aren’t searching yet. Many small businesses start with one, learn, and only then add the other.

At a glance: Google = people searching; Meta = people discovering; Start with one platform; Send clicks to a landing page; Track enquiries, not likes; Test with a budget you can afford.

When to start with Google

  • Customers already search for your service by name.
  • Your service solves an urgent problem.
  • You serve a specific local area and people search “near me”.

When to start with Meta

  • Your product or result looks great in photos or video.
  • You are launching something new that people don’t know to search for.
  • You can describe your ideal customer by interests, location and life stage.
  • You want to promote an event, offer or free resource.

Before you spend anything

  1. A clear offer. What exactly are you promoting, and why should someone act now?
  2. A good landing page. Sending ad clicks to a vague homepage or an Instagram profile wastes money. A focused page with one clear action usually performs better and is easier to measure.
  3. Tracking. Set up conversion tracking so you know which ads lead to enquiries, not just clicks.
  4. A test budget you can afford. Treat the first weeks as learning. Decide in advance how much you are comfortable testing with.
  5. Accounts in your name. Your ad accounts, pages and data should belong to your business — even if someone else manages them.

A simple way to start

  • Choose one platform and one offer.
  • Create two or three versions of the ad so you can compare messages or images.
  • Let them run long enough to collect meaningful data before changing everything.
  • Pause what clearly doesn’t work and put the budget behind what does.
  • Watch cost per enquiry, not just clicks or likes.

Mistakes that waste budget

  • Targeting everyone instead of the people most likely to buy.
  • Boosting random posts without a goal.
  • Changing settings every day before the platform has enough data.
  • Ignoring the landing page — often the real reason ads don’t convert.
  • Advertising in restricted categories without checking the platform’s rules.

Quick answers

Common follow-up questions.

Still unsure? Ask me anything or message me on WhatsApp.

How much should a small business spend on ads?

There is no universal number. Start with an amount you can afford to test for several weeks, measure cost per enquiry, and increase only when the numbers make sense for your business.

Can I run both at once?

Yes, but starting with one makes it easier to learn what works. Add the second once the first is running well.

Is boosting an Instagram post the same as running Meta ads?

Boosting is a simplified version with fewer options. Ads Manager gives you more control over targeting, placement and measurement.
